about the fiscal cliff because within the hour john boehner was on the floor and said his meeting was nice. >> cordial. >> where are the cuts? both sides saying that the other has not been specific enough about what they're willing to put on the table. the calendar now is the real enemy. they have to get some kind of outline together or else it's going to be a legislative agreement to create another commission and tregers down the road, and that is going to freak the markets. >> we'll see how freaked the markets get. you may have better insight into that than i do. also, it's not just the calendar is an enemy. the desire to have the other side take the leap first is the enemy, and also, i think keep your eye on the debt ceiling. the president's desire to wrap this in the republicans desire to kick that can down the road and have perhaps more leverage in later debt ceiling negotiations could end up also being something that makes it very difficult to reach closure here by the time we all want to go away for the holiday. >> you can say that again. ruth marcus, thank you so much. >>

blame. should we put any stock in that kind of polling about the fiscal cliff or do people not know b. enough about it and that's not influencing what's go on between john boehner, president obama, mitch mcconnell and the other folk on the hill? >> they probably have more awareness than some can imagine. but having said that, it not where it is now, it's when you get to the end when people saw what the options were and the choices were, and then they decide who they think either helped or didn't help. that's sort of the critical moment. at this point, i -- the public wanted to see this resolved is where they're at the this point. >> right. and i always say, polling at this point given how little people know about the specifics of what could go into any deal, we don't have a deal, but if we did, may not be worth all that much. go ahead. >> again, one last thing. that's what's being negotiated at this point what are the specifics that go into it so people can pass judgment on it. >> i want to go to you, we've all been through this before, i feel like this is here we go again. >> here we go again. oh yes. >> all over. >> all over again. >> it feels, to me, the opt

to avoid the fiscal cliff. >> there is a growing group of folks that are looking at this and realizing that we don't have a lot of cards as it relates to the tax issue before year end. i mean, we have one house, that's it. the presidency and the senate and the democrats' hands. >> coming up, here congressman chris van holland, the top house democrat in these talks. >> along with bill daley, the former white house chief of staff who prided over the last round of budget negotiations. in the meantime, the anti-union fight, which is michigan. the heart and soul of the labor movement. after saying it was their best prank ever, are these crocodile tears? the aussie dj's are all apologies now that the nurse has tragically committed suicide. >> i mean, personally i'm -- >> the thought that we may have played a part in that is gut wrenching. >> and speaking of tears, "saturday night live" spoofed the fiscal cliff talks this week in that opening skit. president obama says he is giving in to republicans to save boehner face. >> you know what, republicans, you win, okay? you get what you

numbers that we just saw on your poll so that by the time we hit the fiscal cliff fall-off point, the public will not equally blame the democrats or the republicans. they will blame the republicans. i don't think john boehner can do local tv hits and change people's minds. >> that's always, of course, the megaphone that the white house enjoys, and they add this to the schedule because they can tell day by day how it's tracking. >> sure. >> how is this going to affect issues coming up? for instance, immigration. >> well -- >> which the president said to "the des moines register" before the election, is one of his top priorities. >> i talked to people in the white house who are very familiar with the legislative agenda of the president, and they say comprehensive immigration reform -- we're not talking just the dream act that affects children and doesn't do anything about the 11 million. we're talking about putting 11 million people on a road to citizenship that the president is committed to this. it isn't just a political ploy to get hispanic votes, though it will. it's going to come out -- it's going to come up right after immigration. i'm sorry. the inauguration. he is very serious about it, and they feel

our economy right to the edge of the fiscal cliff. it's time for the president, if he's serious to come back to us with a counter offer. >> the president told a virginia family on thursday he won't back down on taxing the rich. >> just to be clear, i'm not going to sign any package that somehow prevents the top rate from going up for folks at the top 2%. but i do remain optimistic that we can get something done that is good for families like this one. >> the rebels gain on assad raising fears he might use chemical weapons. that was enough to frighten the russians into talking with hillary clinton about a political transition. >> the united states stands with the syrian people in insisting that any transition process re -- result in a unified democratic syria in which all citizens are represented. the future of this kind cannot possibly include assad. >> a tragic turn of events in london. the nurse that first transferred that prank call to duchess catherine is found dead. david axelrod shaves it all off on "morning joe." >> joe scarborough. >> are your friends at the white house wat
